Nutrition policy

Personally, I think it is important to offer children healthy food and that they (learn to) eat healthy. A healthy and balanced diet is the foundation for good and strong health. Anyone who feels healthy has optimal conditions for development. My nutrition policy is based on advice from the Nutrition Center.

During the day there are fixed eating moments and these take place at the table. This creates a recognizable pattern which gives the children peace of mind. The table is set invitingly, if possible together with the children. Fresh and varied food and drinks are offered daily. The foods I offer contain mostly good, unsaturated fats and a minimal use of salt and sugar.

When giving food, I take into account the cultural backgrounds of children, diets and allergies. Therefore, I fill in the allergies / dietary requirements form together with the parents. If there is a special diet or food allergy, I may ask the parents to bring their own food for the child. With babies I take into account their individual schedule. Mothers can come and feed their baby themselves and otherwise provide breast or bottle feeding.

Both fruits and vegetables are offered daily. During lunch I alternate bread meals with vegetarian hot meals. There are several reasons for this. Many children are less tired at lunchtime than at the end of the day and eating together has a stimulating effect. In addition, a hot meal for lunch usually offers more variety and vegetables than a bread meal. It also gives parents the flexibility to choose between a hot meal or a bread meal in the evening. The advantage of a hot meal twice a day is, among other things, that the recommended amount of vegetables per day may be achieved more easily. When children are ready, they learn to prepare their own bread meal. They choose their own toppings and are encouraged to vary the toppings and to taste different types.

During hot summer days, special activities and holidays, there are times when an exception is made to the range of healthy food. In my opinion, an ice cream or baking cookies together should also be possible sometimes. And a child who has his birthday can also treat the other children to something delicious. Please consult me first regarding the various ages and possible allergies of the other children.

Of course I always eat with the children myself. In addition to my guiding role, I also set an example for the children in healthy eating habits. The eating moments are pleasant moments where we all sit together. We can have a nice chat and we often sing songs. We take our time to eat, but don’t sit too long at the table either. If there is something the children don’t want to eat, I don’t force them.

The principles above give you an insight into what I find important in the field of nutrition and eating habits. The complete nutrition protocol is available to view at my childminder care.
